The regional framework - A Fitter Future for All (2012) aims to empower the population of Northern Ireland to make health choices, reduce the risk of overweight and obesity related diseases and improve health and wellbeing, by creating an environment that supports and promotes a physically active lifestyle and a healthy diet.

A range of outcomes had been developed to deliver the long-term aims of the Framework and outcome 14 specifically relates to programmes and resources that promote healthier lifestyles, healthy eating and practical food skills.

Research shows cooking skills programmes such as Cook it!  have numerous benefits such as:

  • an increase in knowledge about food and health, eg. an understanding of healthy eating;
  • an increase in confidence around healthy eating, eg. confidence to try new foods, and follow or adapt recipes;
  • an improvement in cooking skills – such as cooking techniques and knife skills;
  • Attempts to change behaviour to improve nutrition, eg. eating fewer takeaways or ready meals, changing cooking habits to reduce salt, fat or sugar, and eating more fruit and vegetables;
  • outcomes beyond nutrition – such as improved family relationships, improved social skills, and improved confidence.
