In the South and South East of Ireland (Cork University Maternity Hospital, Wexford General and Waterford Regional Hospitals) parents of all babies born are offered a hearing screen for their baby.

Tests conducted as part of a hearing screen include:

  1. Otoacoustic Emission (OAE) test
  2. Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) test

A hearing screen will allow those babies who do have a hearing loss to be identified early. Early identification is known to be important for the development of the child. It also means that support and information can be provided to parents at an early stage.
