This research report outlines the main findings of Vital Statistics 2001 â?" which was the fifth annual
national Gay Menâ?Ts Sex Survey (henceforth GMSS). The survey was carried out during the summer
of 2001 by Sigma Research in partnership with 73 health promotion agencies across England
and Wales. The information contained here is about HIV infection, sex between men and HIV prevention needs.
The reportâ?Ts audience are people involved in planning and delivering programmes to address the
HIV prevention needs of homosexually active men. This report complements those from the 1997
(Hickson, Reid et al., 1998); 1998 (Hickson,Weatherburn et al., 1999), 1999 (Weatherburn, Hickson
et al., 2000) and 2000 (Hickson, Reid et al., 2001) surveys.
