Informing service responses to co-occurring complex needs (Advances in Dual Diagnosis v. 10 no. 1 2017)

Both the sexual assault and alcohol and other drug (AOD) sectors see clients presenting with histories of abuse and trauma. This article reports on a project to explore the complex intersections between sexual victimisation and AOD use, and to build the capacity of these sectors in Victoria to respond more effectively. The 'Establishing the Connection' project featured a literature review and forums, interviews, and surveys with key stakeholders from the sexual assault and AOD sectors. Though most of the participating practitioners and clinicians were aware of the interrelationship between sexual victimisation and AOD use, many lacked access to resources, formal referral processes, and cross-sector knowledge to best assist clients with co-occurring issues. However, there is momentum and goodwill that could be harnessed to help build collaborative partnerships into the future.
